Utah Cuts DUI Alcohol Limit to Lowest Level in United States

The maximum blood alcohol limit across most states is .08 percent. Blow more than this limit into a breathalyzer and you would be considered intoxicated under the law. However, representatives in Utah feel this limit is too generous and have put a law into effect that lowers the DUI alcohol limit. Now, anything over .05 percent in Utah could be considered intoxicated.

Support for and Against

Gary Herbert, Utah’s governor, has received hundreds of calls regarding the bill. Some have been extremely supportive of the cause, including those in the health and transportation fields. To many people, drunk drivers have caused havoc on the streets and have caused bodily harm and even fatalities to other drivers on the road. The .05 percent limit is the strictest drunk driving law in all the United States, with the governor hoping to cut down on drinking and driving crimes that result in harm or death.

On the other hand, not everyone is supportive of the bill. Many in the tourism and hospitality industry say the level is entirely too low. For example, a 120-pound woman could have just one drink and she’d already be considered past the limit. In any event, Utah officials state that the purpose of lowering the DUI alcohol limit is intended to protect everyone who is on the road. Men and women can continue to drink all they want. The goal is simply to deter them from driving afterward and potentially causing traffic accidents

A Worthy Goal

According to Utah reps, if a person has had even a couple of drinks and will blow more than a .05 on the breathalyzer, he or she should not be driving. And they hope that measures like these can help to cut down on unnecessary death and destruction.

In fact, the National Transportation Safety Board wants to see this limit applied to all states. They hope future laws will be passed to eliminate drunk driving and the accidents caused by it.
